Southern Water have confirmed that; “ During planned maintenance at our Otterbourne water supply works systems detected that untreated water was not being filtered properly.” The works was shutdown leaving at least 13,000 customers in Southampton and Winchester with little or no water for several days. Work then got underway “to safely contain, drain, clean, disinfect and refill the part of the system affected.”
This came the day after Southern Water gave reassurances at the Havant public meeting on 15 February that Southern Water can be trusted with the proposed complex effluent recycling treatment process!
This was the second incident causing loss of supplies in less than 3 months at the Otterburne works and a third incident followed on February 25, when a Southern Water spokesman confirmed that “A technical error affected our ability to source groundwater”.
